A collegiate recovery program (CRP) — sometimes called a collegiate recovery community (CRC) — is a college- or university-supported program that helps students in recovery from substance use disorder stay well while they earn a degree. Most are housed in student health, counseling, or student affairs and are staffed by the institution rather than run as a student organization.
The core ingredients are a dedicated space on campus, peer support from other students in recovery, regular meetings, and staff who understand both recovery and college life. Many programs add recovery housing, scholarships, sober social events, academic support, and family programming.
The first programs opened at Brown University (1977), Rutgers University (1983), and Texas Tech University (1986). The field grew through the 2010s and today includes programs at large public universities, private colleges, and community colleges across most states.
The Association of Recovery in Higher Education (ARHE) is the national membership organization for collegiate recovery programs. It publishes standards for CRPs, runs an annual conference, and maintains a directory of member programs. Membership indicates a program has engaged with the field, but ARHE does not license or accredit programs, and not every legitimate CRP is a member.
Program details on Sober Nation come from the ARHE directory and each program's own website. Staffing, housing, and scholarships change from year to year — confirm anything that matters to you with the program directly.

A room students can use between classes and at least one paid staff member are the two clearest signs a program is funded rather than a student club.
Weekly on-campus meetings and an active membership count tell you whether you will actually meet peers. Small programs can still be excellent — ask how often the group gets together.
Some schools run substance-free residence halls or dedicated recovery floors; others partner with off-campus sober living. If housing matters, ask about eligibility and cost early.
A number of programs award recovery scholarships to members who stay engaged. Amounts and criteria vary, so ask what is required to keep one.
Programs typically ask for a period of continuous recovery, a short application or interview, and agreement to a community contract. Check whether students in medication-assisted recovery are welcome.
Look for links to counseling services, academic advising, alumni, and local meetings — the best programs are woven into the school rather than sitting beside it.
