These terms overlap and are used inconsistently, so use the descriptions below as a guide and confirm the details with the house itself.

Sober living home

A shared house where every resident agrees to stay alcohol- and drug-free. Most are privately run by an operator or house manager, charge weekly or monthly rent, and expect residents to work or attend school, go to meetings, follow house rules, and pass drug tests. There is usually no clinical treatment on site; residents attend outpatient care elsewhere if they need it.

Oxford House

A specific model of sober house chartered by Oxford House, Inc. Each house is rented by the residents themselves, run democratically by vote, and has no paid staff. Residents split rent and utilities equally, and anyone who relapses must leave. New residents apply and are voted in by the current members after an interview.

Transitional housing

Time-limited housing attached to a treatment program, nonprofit, or agency. Residents are usually enrolled in or coming out of that program, and case management or outpatient services are often part of the arrangement. Length of stay is typically capped (commonly 3–24 months).

What to Ask Before You Move In

  1. 1What does it cost per week or month, and is there a move-in fee or deposit? What is included (utilities, food, linens)?
  2. 2Is there a minimum or maximum length of stay? What happens if you relapse?
  3. 3Who runs the house day to day: a paid manager, a senior resident, or the residents as a group?
  4. 4How often is drug and alcohol testing done, and how is it paid for?
  5. 5Are medications for opioid or alcohol use disorder (buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) allowed? Are psychiatric medications allowed?
  6. 6What are the rules on curfew, overnight guests, work or school requirements, and meeting attendance?
  7. 7How many people share a bedroom and a bathroom?
  8. 8Is the house certified by a state agency or a NARR affiliate, or chartered by Oxford House? Can you see the certificate?
  9. 9Can you visit and talk to current residents before you decide?
