What it was like?

Addiction was emptiness, suffering, loneliness, unmanageabilty in all aspects of life, fear, anger, worthlessness, spiritual bankruptcy, jail, withdrawal, violence, harm to family and loved ones the list goes on, overdose, homelessness, jobless, self pity, theft, desperation, depression, suicidal thoughts, shame, guilt

What happened?

Incarcerated followed by drug court mandating me to treatment or jail time. Counselor told me to take off the mask I had been wearing. I fought the process until I realized my way didn't work anymore. Went to meetings got a sponsor and tried out a spiritual approach to life. Had a spiritual awakening found a higher power and have not had to pick up a drink or drug since.

What it is like now?

Today I have freedom. I do have everyday struggles but my faith and tools always get me through and certain that my struggles will turn into joy again. I went back to school after dropping out years prior got Associates degree in Chemical dependency counseling and I work for the same agency I was once a client. I work with other addicts outside of work. It is the bright spot of my life and gives me a sense of purpose I looked for my whole life. The recovery program not only removed my obsession to drink and but it has improved every area of my life. I am getting married in August and it would not be possible without these tools, I have made amends with my family and We have a beautiful relationship. The list of benefits and blessings of recovery are endless not to mention the fun! We all think that sobriety is boring at first but I have gone skydiving I box and not to mention the comradery of true fellowship in this recovery life is second to none. If you are new or considering recovery give your self a break and try a new life of freedom because it is possible and it works.
