Name: Gary C

Age: 58

Sober Since: 05 / 21 / 2007

Sober For: 16 Years & 337 Days

What it was like?

was out of control and I was addicted to several things at once, alcohol, opiates, stealing and others. It was like " switching seats on the Titanic and I was drowning each and every day trying to figure it out for myself.and I couldn't. I got so depressed in May 2006 that I tried to commit suicide, I had a Guardian Angel holding my hand that day and I'm so glad that I didn't succeed

What happened?

had an epiphany and I looked linto a beer glass and I said that's it, I'm done. Being a Veteran,I called the Mental Health Clinic and checked into rehab the next day. The VA gave me the tools to get sober, all I had to do was use them to maintain my sobriety. I'm proud to say I have. Only by the Grace of God, I am still here.

What it is like now?

Now, I am happily married and I am on The Board of Directors of the Folds of Honor Western Carolina Chapter. I'm still continuing to serve my country, by helping Veteran's with Suicide Prevention and sharing my Sober Success Story at VA Hospitals across the US.
