Name: Donna Duke

Age: 44

Sober Since: 08 / 06 / 2009

Sober For: 14 Years & 264 Days

What it was like?

My first experience with alcohol was a total blackout and I ended up in the emergency room with alcohol poisoning. All I could think about afterwards was getting the chance to do it again. Alcohol gave me everything I was lacking. I was talkative, my anxiety was gone, I became flirty, felt pretty, confident, happy, excited and free from the pain of my home life.

What happened?

Like most people with the disease of addiction; I ended up homeless, in and out of jail, hopeless, desperate and suicidal. I ended up in treatment and found my way to the rooms of AA and NA.

What it is like now?

Recovery has delivered everything I thought drugs and alcohol could give me. I have a full life, a wonderful husband, a rewarding career and most of all I am of service to others suffering from the same disease that once held me in bondage.
