About Center for Students in Recovery

The Center for Students in Recovery at The University of Texas at Austin is a campus community for students in recovery or hoping to get there. It runs a dedicated center on the second floor of the William C. Powers, Jr. Activity Center, hosts five weekly meetings, and awards recovery scholarships each fall and spring.

The Center for Students in Recovery, known on campus as CSR, describes its mission as giving students in recovery, and students hoping for recovery, a community where they can succeed academically while having a genuine college experience free from alcohol and other drugs.

The center is in suite 2.112 of the William C. Powers, Jr. Activity Center at 2201 Speedway. It is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Regular gatherings include Campus Open Recovery, a 12-step style meeting with pizza on Tuesday evenings; SMART Recovery, a secular four-point program; a Cannabis Recovery meeting for students struggling with cannabis use; Afternoon Yoga on Mondays; and the Longhorn Recovery Circle on Friday afternoons, a social meeting whose activities change weekly. The center also hosts Snack and Study sessions with free snacks and a quiet study space.

Everyone is welcome at CSR regardless of length of sobriety, academic stage, age or enrollment status. Scholarships are the exception: they require current UT Austin enrollment. Students get involved through the weekly meetings, the Longhorns For Recovery student organization, outreach activities such as tabling and speaking, sober social activities and recovery-related service work.

  • Dedicated center in the William C. Powers, Jr. Activity Center, open five days a week
  • Five weekly meetings spanning 12-step, SMART Recovery, cannabis-specific recovery, yoga and a social circle
  • Recovery scholarships funded by La Hacienda each fall and spring
  • Open to anyone regardless of length of sobriety, age or enrollment status
  • Programming for process addictions, students with disabilities and underserved student populations

Weekly meetings

Afternoon Yoga runs Mondays from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Campus Open Recovery, the 12-step style meeting, meets Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. SMART Recovery, Cannabis Recovery and the Longhorn Recovery Circle each meet weekly on afternoons during the week; the events calendar on the center's website has the current schedule. All meetings are held in the center at WCP 2.112.

Recovery scholarships

Scholarships funded by La Hacienda are awarded at the start of each fall and spring semester as funds are available, with applications due the summer or semester before. Applicants must be enrolled at UT Austin, email the application as a PDF to the CSR Director by the deadline, and log a minimum of 30 hours of participation across CSR meetings, Longhorns For Recovery events and service hours, outreach, sober social activities and recovery-related service work. There is no minimum GPA, though the center says it hopes to see grades improve and may verify what applicants report. Recipients write a one-page thank-you letter to the funder's board within two weeks of the award.

How to get involved

Stop by the center during its hours, come to any weekly meeting, or use the events calendar on the website to find upcoming gatherings. The Longhorns For Recovery student organization holds its own meetings, events and service projects.
