Treatment can help you or your loved one learn to live a sober life. Over 85% of clients in Utah's treatment facilities in 2016 had positive treatment outcomes, and were either stable, significantly improved, or deemed “in recovery” when treatment ended. On average, more than twice as many people report abstinence from drugs when released from treatment in Utah, compared to when treatment begins.

Substance abuse treatment is typically in an inpatient or outpatient setting. An inpatient rehab offers round-the-clock care and support, intensive daily treatment activities, and clients live at the facility for a designated period of time. Outpatient services, on the other hand, are offered during scheduled daytime hours, and clients have more freedom to uphold home and work responsibilities. Many people attend outpatient treatment after inpatient, to help with the transition into a sober life, or as a more viable treatment option financially and time-wise.

Between Utah’s inpatient and outpatient facilities, there are almost 200 different rehabs across the state—each with a unique treatment approach and special services offered. Some rehabs may suit your needs or your loved one’s needs better than others. Treatment is meant to be personalized and tailored to the individual, so it’s important to do your research and consider what you’re looking for in a rehab.

Because different age groups and genders face unique issues, some treatment programs or counseling groups are age-specific or gender-specific. There are also therapy groups and treatment programs designed to help people who have experienced traumas or abuse and use substance abuse as a coping mechanism. One of the most common factors that contributes to substance abuse is mental illness, so there are also dual diagnosis facilities that treat co-occurring disorders alongside substance abuse issues.

The state of Utah has been gravely impacted by the United States’ opioid epidemic. Communities across the state are suffering from the effects of not only illegal heroin, but also legal prescription painkillers. In 2015, Utah’s number of yearly prescription opioid overdose deaths was almost four times as many as in 2000, just 10 years prior. On average, between six to 10 people in Utah are dying every week from both heroin and opioid abuse.

      Utah’s Recovery Advocates

      • Utah’s Department of Human Services (DHS) has a Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH), which is the state’s behavioral health authority. The DSAMH oversees Utah’s publicly funded prevention and treatment system, and connects people in need with quality treatment services.
      • The DSAMH is involved in statewide prevention efforts, with Prevention Coordinators in every county. These coordinators help to implement prevention programs throughout Utah, seeking to prevent underage drinking, prescription drug abuse, and illicit drug abuse.
      • In partnership with the Utah Pharmaceutical Drug Community Project and several other organizations, the DSAMH helps to sponsor Utah’s “Use Only As Directed” campaign. The educational campaign is designed to inform communities about safe use, storage, and disposal of prescription pain medications, in order to prevent misuse and abuse.
      • ParentsEmpowered.org is an educational campaign funded by several state agencies in Utah. The campaign provides parents and guardians with information about teen alcohol use and strategies for preventing underage drinking.
      • Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) is a non-profit organization, helping people across the state achieve long-term recovery from substance abuse. USARA seeks to involve the community in recovery efforts, advocates for fair legislation that affects recovering people, and manages a Recovery Community Center (RCC) where people in recovery can find resources and support.
