There are so many factors that can contribute to substance abuse—age, gender, cultural identity, family relationships, mental health, life experiences. Effective substance abuse treatment will be individualized based on what each person needs. It’s also helpful to consider what possible factors might play a part in your or your loved one’s substance abuse behaviors, so you can seek treatment options that will best address those issues.

You’ll find rehabs in South Dakota with gender-specific groups, and some with programs for adolescents, young adults, or seniors. There are programs tailored to people with DUIs, people in the criminal justice system, veterans, and active-duty members of the military. Some treatment facilities will offer special support or counseling for clients who have experienced trauma, domestic violence, or sexual abuse. Substance abuse often develops used as a coping mechanism for people who have experienced traumas—both in childhood and adulthood.

The goal of addiction treatment is to address these contributing factors and underlying issues in each person. One major factor that can contribute to substance abuse is mental illness. Almost 40% of adults in the U.S. with a substance use disorder also had a co-occurring mental illness. Whether a person is living with an anxiety disorder, mood disorder, or eating disorder, any of these can lead to substance misuse and abuse. You’ll find that a large portion of South Dakota’s rehabs are dual diagnosis facilities, which treat mental illness alongside substance abuse issues.

Beyond the special programs and approaches offered at different rehabs, you’ll have to choose between two major treatment formats: inpatient and outpatient. Inpatient treatment, also called residential treatment, is a more involved option that offers a client 24/7 care and intensive daily therapy. Clients live at the treatment facility for a period of time, where they are safely separated from their home lives and the potential for relapse. This time can be crucial for clients to build a foundation in recovery and learn to live a sober life.

For some people, outpatient treatment is a more viable option because clients attend treatment activities during the day but do not reside at the facility. This allows clients to maintain work, home, or family responsibilities as needed. Early in recovery, the risk for relapse is high, and outpatient treatment does not offer the same safety and security that inpatient does. Clients often attend outpatient as a follow-up to their inpatient stay. However, if scheduling or financial concerns are preventing you from seeking treatment, outpatient can be equally impactful treatment option—with sufficient time and energy invested into it.

Each rehab will be a bit different in their philosophy and approach to treatment, which is why it’s important to consider what services or setting will best suit you or your loved one.
