There are more than 350 treatment facilities in Minnesota, so it’s important to do your research about the services offered. Most are outpatient facilities, but the state has a higher proportion of inpatient (or residential) treatment facilities than most. At a residential facility, clients are safely separated from potential threats to their sobriety, which can be critical for people battling opioid dependence.

In the treatment field, it’s well-understood that addiction can come with underlying conditions—most commonly, mental illness. Dual diagnosis facilities are designed to help in these situations, by offering mental health services alongside substance abuse treatment. There’s a smaller selection of these rehabs in Minnesota, so be sure to ask about which services are offered if you’re interested in dual diagnosis treatment.

Almost all facilities in Minnesota will accept cash or self-payment, but the insurance plans that they accept will always vary. For clients who can’t afford treatment, about 1 in 4 facilities will offer treatment at no charge. The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) has more information about qualifying for financial help.

Drug abuse has been a growing problem in Minnesota. The state has struggled with opioid abuse, as overdose deaths have increased by more than 500% in the past 15 years. Minnesota—Saving Lives through Treatment and Harm Reduction

To stem the tide of overdose deaths, Minnesota has adopted progressive harm reduction strategies. The state provides Narcan training and distribution programs, as well as access to clean syringes for intravenous drug users. Minnesota law enforcement has also set up locations where citizens can drop off their unused prescription drugs to prevent them being diverted to the street.
