5 Awesome Addiction Recovery Charities That You Should Know About

A few weeks back, I wrote about a wonderful organization called The Herren Project and all they are doing for the recovery community in raising awareness and reducing the stigma that surrounds addiction.

In this article, I felt it was time to spotlight some other addiction recovery charities that are doing great work in spreading the message that recovery from substance abuse is possible. These recovery charities may not get the gloss, but they work tirelessly educate, advocate and raise funds to provide programs that help those struggling in addiction get the fresh start they deserve as recovering people.

The following are 5 examples of addiction recovery charities that you need to check out and maybe put your time, voice and money behind. These organizations are helping to strengthen our recovery community and give it a stronger voice. Take some time and check out what they have to offer.

1 – Amy Winehouse Foundation

Formed after the overdose death of the British soul singer in July 2011, The Amy Winehouse Foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol addiction among young people. Through music education, music therapy programs and drug prevention and rehab programs, the foundation aims to support those populations who are most vulnerable to drug abuse and addiction. Additionally, the Amy Winehouse Foundation also provides scholarships and grants to deserving students who come from disadvantaged families. The foundation has offices both in the United States and in England.

2 – To Write Love on Her Arms

To Write Love on Her Arms is an organization that was founded in early 2006 to tackle substance abuse issues and related mental health issues such as depression, suicide, and self-harm. Since it’s formation, the organization (also known as TWLOHA) has raised millions of dollars for related organizations worldwide and has partnered with universities, social media sites and music tours such as Vans Warped Tour to spread their message. TWLOHA has received endorsements and support from celebrities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Miley Cyrus and the pop group One Direction.

3 – Shatterproof

Shatterproof was formed by entrepreneur Gary Mendell after losing his son Brian to drug addiction in 2011. Since its formation, the organization has raised over $9 million and is very active in advocacy campaigns, lobbying for legislation as well addressing the gaps in funding for addiction treatment programs. The mission of Shatterproof is to protect children from drug and alcohol addiction and to end the stigma and suffering of those affected by the disease of addiction. Shatterproof’s goal is to reduce the number of drug-related deaths among young people by half in 2o years.

4 – Natural High

Natural High is an organization that looks to inspire youth to find their own path in living a substance-free lifestyle. Natural High was created in response to the perceived ineffectiveness of the prevailing Just Say No program. The organization provides educational programming that has reached more than 20,000 classrooms. Additionally, Natural High partners with drug-free celebrity role models who share their stories about growing up and the choices they made to achieve their dreams. These video interviews are paired with worksheets and discussion guides for educators to spark meaningful conversations with students.

5 – Foundation for Alcoholism Research (FAR)

FAR was founded in 2008 with the objective of raising funds for research in areas involving the causes, identification, prevention, detection, treatment and cure of alcoholism as a disease. 100% of donations that are received funds research into the development of  effective medical treatments for alcohol dependence and addiction. As an organization, FAR does not presume to know the answers to what help is needed.

Addiction recovery charities are critical in helping the recovery community as a whole grow stronger. Through educational programming, advocacy campaigns, scholarships and grants and fundraising, these organizations are working at a grassroots level to bring the message to the masses that addiction does not have to be a life sentence.

Recovery is not only possible, there are many people of all ages and walks of life who are living testimony of that fact.
