If you’re looking for a rehab in California, it’s important to do some research and decide what you need from a treatment center. There are so many different options and approaches to treatment—and the state has over 1,600 facilities.
The majority of California facilities treat both alcohol and drug abuse, though many facilities offer treatment geared towards a specific substance. While most offer substance abuse treatment services primarily, nearly 1 in 4 are dual diagnosis facilities—providing mental health services alongside addiction treatment.
There are mostly outpatient facilities in California, but there’s a higher proportion of rehabs that offer inpatient care—almost 40%— than in most other states. As you look into facilities, be sure to ask about their payment options. Each accepts different private and state-funded insurance plans, and most will accept self-payment. More than half of California rehabs will offer treatment at no charge for clients who can’t pay.
Select a Rehab Center by County
The state of California has become a leader in approaches to harm reduction for substance abuse. At select pharmacies, individuals can find clean syringes and acquire naloxone—the life-saving drug that reverses an opioid overdose. Recovery advocates are working to increase the effectiveness of addiction treatment in the state, and make those valuable resources accessible to more people.

- 149,779 people were admitted to California treatment centers in 2015.
- Of those treatment admissions, the primary drug of abuse for 30% of people was methamphetamine and other amphetamines, followed by heroin for nearly 25% of people.

California’s Substance Abuse Organizations
- The Substance Use Disorder Compliance Division (SUDCD) is within California’s DHCS. The division oversees licensing and certification for treatment providers and facilities, as well as monitors these programs.
- California’s DHCS also has a Substance Use Disorder-Program, Policy, and Fiscal Division (SUD-PPFD), which directs substance abuse prevention strategies, statewide treatment programs, and grants for treatment funding.
- For people addicted to opiates, the DHCS has a Narcotic Treatment Programs (NTP) Section that oversees opioid treatment facilities. They seek to provide detox, medication-assisted treatment, and rehabilitative services to people struggling with heroin or opioid painkillers.
- Southern California Alcohol and Drug Programs, Inc. (SCADP) aims to prevent and treat substance abuse among disadvantaged and underserved populations—like the homeless, pregnant women, the deaf & hard of hearing, people living with HIV/AIDS, and detainees of the criminal justice system.
